What Medigap Insurance Covers and What It Doesn’t in Crystal Lake, IL
Medigap insurance is one of those topics that sounds straightforward until you actually sit down and try to figure out what it does and doesn’t pay for. If you’re approaching Medicare eligibility or already enrolled, you’ve probably heard the term thrown around quite a bit. So let’s clear it up: Medigap (also called Medicare Supplement Insurance) is private coverage that helps pay for the gaps Original Medicare leaves behind, things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. But it has real limits, too, and knowing both sides of that coin matters a lot when you’re on a fixed income.
What Medigap Insurance Is Designed to Cover
Original Medicare, Parts A and B, covers a solid foundation of hospital and medical services, but it doesn’t cover everything. You can still end up with significant out-of-pocket costs. That’s exactly where a Medigap plan steps in.
Depending on which standardized plan letter you choose, Medigap can help cover some or all of the following:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, often up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits run out
- Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayments
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- The Part A deductible
- The Part B deductible (for plans available to those who became eligible for Medicare before January 2020)
- Part B excess charges, which are extra amounts some doctors can bill above the Medicare-approved rate
- Emergency medical care during foreign travel, up to plan limits
The plans are standardized by the federal government, so a Plan G in Crystal Lake, IL works the same way as a Plan G anywhere else in Illinois. The differences between companies come down to price and service, not benefits.
What Medigap Does Not Cover
This is where a lot of people get surprised, so it’s worth being direct about it.
Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you enrolled in a Medigap plan on or after January 2006, prescription drug coverage isn’t included. You’d need a separate Medicare Part D plan for that. We’re happy to talk through how Part D fits alongside a Medigap policy, because getting both pieces right together really does affect what you pay at the pharmacy each month.
Beyond prescriptions, Medigap also generally does not cover:
- Dental care
- Vision care or eyeglasses
- Hearing aids
- Long-term custodial care (such as help with daily activities in a nursing home)
- Private-duty nursing
It’s also worth knowing that Medigap works alongside Original Medicare only. It doesn’t work with Medicare Advantage plans. So if you’re enrolled in Medicare Advantage, a Medigap policy wouldn’t apply.
Timing Matters More Than Most People Realize
One thing we see catch people off guard, especially folks coming to us from Rockford, Aurora, Elgin, and Crystal Lake, IL, is how important enrollment timing is. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this six-month window, insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of pre-existing health conditions. Once that window closes, you may still be able to get coverage, but it often costs more or comes with limitations depending on your health history.
That’s why we consistently encourage people to get a plan in place before they actually need it, not after.
