Open Enrollment Is Here: How to Review Your Medicare Part D Prescription Plan Before the Deadline

Medicare Part D open enrollment is one of the most important windows of the year for anyone on Medicare, and it opens October 15. If you have a standalone prescription drug plan, this is your annual opportunity to review it, compare your options, and make sure you’re not paying more than you should for the medications you take every day. Whether you’re in Belvidere, Rockford, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, or anywhere else across Illinois, the deadline is the same for everyone: December 7. After that, your current plan rolls over automatically, for better or worse.Medicare Part D

Why “Automatic Renewal” Isn’t Always Good News

A lot of people assume that if their plan worked fine last year, it’ll be fine again. That’s a reasonable thought, but it’s not always how things play out. Drug plan formularies change every year. That means the medications your plan covered last year might move to a higher cost tier this year, or in some cases drop off the formulary entirely. Premiums shift too. Pharmacies enter and exit networks. A plan that was a solid value in the past can quietly become a much more expensive choice without you doing anything wrong at all.

We’ve seen this firsthand with clients throughout Illinois. One of our clients documented savings of $416 on their prescription plan after taking the time to review their coverage and compare options. That kind of savings doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when someone actually sits down, looks at the details, and does the comparison work before the enrollment window closes.

What to Look at When You Review Your Part D Plan

When you’re evaluating your current Medicare Part D prescription plan or considering a switch, a few things are worth a close look.

Start with your medications. Pull together a current list of every prescription you take, including dosages and how often you fill them. Then check whether each drug is still on your plan’s formulary for the coming year, and at what tier. The Annual Notice of Change letter your plan is required to send you in September is a good starting point. It will spell out what’s changing.

Next, look at the total cost picture, not just the monthly premium. A plan with a lower premium might have higher copays or coinsurance at the pharmacy, which can flip the math quickly depending on what you’re taking. Compare your estimated out-of-pocket costs for the full year, not just what comes out of your Social Security check each month.

Also pay attention to the pharmacy network. If your preferred pharmacy isn’t in-network or is only a “standard” rather than “preferred” network pharmacy, you may be paying more than necessary each time you fill a prescription.

A Note on What We Do (and Don’t) Offer

We want to be straightforward with you: Medicare And Prescription Services does not sell Part D drug plans directly. We believe in being transparent about that. However, we work closely with clients to help them understand their full Medicare picture, and that naturally includes conversations about how prescription coverage fits in with everything else. If you’re reviewing your Part D plan during open enrollment, it’s also a smart time to look at your Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage coverage alongside it.

Carl Ritz founded this agency with nearly 40 years of experience in insurance, and the whole approach here is built around sitting down with people one on one and working through the details together. We handle the paperwork. We explain the options in plain language. And we keep our clients’ fixed-income realities squarely in mind. That’s what makes the conversation with us different from calling an 800-number on a TV commercial.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Week of November

Open enrollment runs through December 7, but October is the right time to act. Plan comparison tools update with the new year’s information at the start of open enrollment, so you’ll have the most accurate data to work with right now. Waiting until late November adds unnecessary pressure, and if questions come up, there’s less time to get them answered properly.

If you or someone you care about has questions about Medicare coverage this open enrollment season, whether you’re in Belvidere, Rockford, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, or the surrounding areas of Illinois, we’re happy to talk it through. Give us a call or drop us an email and we’ll help you make sense of your options before the deadline arrives.

Our commitment is to provide honest, personal, and experienced guidance that helps you protect your health and your savings.
